On the reservation, there are several coal power plants that help produce energy for local residents. There is a coal power plant that is several miles south of where I grew up and it has affected the local lake that is nearside. Coal power plants are also affecting the air pollution and makes a hazy scenario during the day and night skies. There is also another power plant that is Northwest from where I grew up but it is further away from any kind of human interaction. Both these power plants have caused a huge debate on whether or not they should be completely shut down or just have some towers be shut down. People have lost jobs due to this debate but the power plants continue running. There are other power plants that are facing this issue on the reservation as well but the two that are near my hometown, Kirtland, have both a cause and effect issue. Both of the power plants creates job and energy for local residents. The downside of these power plants are environmental causes such as air pollution and possibly contamination. These power plants provide jobs for both men and women, but favors men overall. There are benefits from these power plants such as internships and scholarships. I believe that on the reservation, we need to find other energy alternatives quickly as possibly. The only energy alternative that we can maybe conclude to would be solar energy since there is hardly water reservoirs and windy areas. If we do not find other alternatives for our energy source, we will eventually ruin Mother Earth and will have nothing left in the end.
